Are You Going to Answer the Door?

It used to be more common to have people come to the front door of your home -- neighbors, salesmen, the milkman, kids selling cookies or popcorn -- but not so much any more. Yes, there are the occasional religious groups or missionaries who hope to visit with you at the door, but most people are unwilling to even acknowledge their presence for fear of potential robbery or bodily harm. This is NOT the world I grew up in where doors remained unlocked all day, windows were wide open, and the welcome mat greeted even the peskiest vacuum cleaner or encyclopedia salesperson.

I wonder if it is fear of the unknown or because we just have the television turned up so loud that we can no longer hear the knocking of One who desires the best for us and wants to share life with us. Yes, we can get so distracted with the fear and "noise" of our life that the most important house call ever might be missed (and no, I am not talking about Publishers Clearinghouse Sweepstakes).

The book of Revelation in the Bible records Jesus' place at the door of our heart.

Revelation 3:20
"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me." ~Jesus

Do you find it odd that the Son of God, Savior of the World, Redeemer of Mankind, is patiently and earnestly waiting on the doorstep of your heart knocking, hoping to come in? I would think if anything that it should be mankind that would be banging on the doors of heaven to please open up and allow us to be a part of God's eternal kingdom. Yet, there He is. Knocking, waiting, even calling out for you to open the door. He is not there to sell you anything but to give you everything you could ever want or need... freely.

Yes, go ahead and open that door. Jesus will come in and fellowship with you. He brings bread and water to the table, but once you've partaken you will never hunger and thirst for anything else.

Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." (John 6:35)

"Whoever believes in me (Jesus), as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’" (John 7:38)

The Scripture found in Revelation is often used by preachers to invite people to a personal relationship with Christ, but it is actually written to believers who have shut God out for whatever reason. Whichever case applies to you, won't you pay attention to the knocking and calling before the sound is so dim that you hear it no more?
