Be Wise
For thousands of years, from Ancient Greek legend to modern literature and TV, humans have portrayed owls as sage and wise. The wise owl appears in everything from The Iliad to Winnie the Pooh. But, it turns out, though they’re excellent hunters, owls probably aren’t any smarter than a lot of other birds.
Many people consider themselves wise in their own eyes or according to the world's standards, but God's ways are much higher. In fact, one must acknowledge their total lack of understanding before they can become teachable by God and truly wise. The Bible tells us:
Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. (1 Corinthians 3:18)
So, what does it mean to be wise? How do I live as a wise person?
1. First, know and do that which is good. A bank teller can quickly detect a counterfeit bill, not because they've studied bad currency but because they authentically know the real deal when they see it.
I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil. (Romans 16:9)
2. Be alert to how you behave in public. Live a life that is sincerely good toward others. Give unbelievers a reason to want to know Jesus.
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. (James 3:13)
3. Study God's Word and grow in His truth. This is the most important because you cannot do #1 and #2 without it. Do not remain as a spiritual infant; rather mature in your faith all the days of your life.
From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:15)
And here's one last word of advice from King Solomon, in case nothing else sticks...
Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. (Proverbs 13:20)
