Hot & Cold Running Water

Hot, steamy pools of water spring from the ground and cold, clear rivers flow down mountains from melting snow. This is Yellowstone. The extremes are what make it fascinating.

Lukewarm is not nearly as desirable. You don't want to bathe in lukewarm water... you want it hot and relaxing. You don't want to drink lukewarm water... you want it cold and refreshing.

Jesus spoke to the members of the church in Laodicea and said they were like lukewarm water. Their lifestyle disgusted Christ because they were neither a source of comfort or refreshment to others. Revelation 3:14-16 reads...

To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

The verses that follow suggest that the people in this city were wealthy with worldly riches but were poor and pitiful spiritually. They thought they had all they needed but were missing out on the very best -- an intimate relationship with God. They WENT to church but failed to BE the church. Money brings happiness temporarily but true joy comes from things that cannot be seen... and it springs forth from a heart for God and others.

Do not be lukewarm and inward-focused. Be a source of hot and cold running water that draws people to Jesus.
